Daily Current Affairs: Human Rights & Education Milestones

Welcome to today's update. As we approach Human Rights Day tomorrow, we also look at a major development in Indian higher education with an Australian giant entering Bengaluru, and a recap of the recently observed Armed Forces Flag Day.

1. Human Rights Day (Approaching: 10th December)

Although observed on the 10th, celebrations and awareness campaigns often begin a day early. This day highlights human rights as the non-negotiable foundation for justice and peace.

📜 Historical Context:
This day commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the UN on 10th December 1948.

Key International Bodies

  • UN Human Rights Council (2006): Based in Geneva, Switzerland. It has 47 member states (including India) dedicated to protecting rights globally.
  • OHCHR: The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights acts as the secretariat.

Human Rights and India

India has a robust framework to protect these rights:

  • Constitution: Fundamental Rights (Part III) and Directive Principles (Part IV).
  • Guardian Body: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), established in 1993 under the PHRA Act, oversees adherence to these rights.

2. Education News: UNSW Opens Campus in Bengaluru

In a major boost for students, the University of New South Wales (UNSW)—ranked 20th globally—is opening a campus in Bengaluru. It becomes the 7th Australian university to operate in India.

What does this mean for students?

  • Courses Offered: Business, Media, Computer Data Science, and Cybersecurity.
  • Timeline: Classes are expected to begin next academic year (record-time approval from UGC).

India-Australia Education Ties (AIESC Meeting)

The recent Australia-India Education and Skills Council (AIESC) meeting has deepened ties:

  • School Level First: For the first time, cooperation has extended to schools. There are plans to align CBSE’s early childhood curriculum with Australian frameworks.
  • Diaspora: Both nations are exploring setting up CBSE-affiliated schools in Australia to serve the growing Indian community there.

3. Armed Forces Flag Day (Observed: 7th December)

Since 1949, India has observed 7th December as Armed Forces Flag Day to honor the bravery of soldiers and veterans. It is a day to recognize not just the soldiers, but the sacrifices of their families.

The Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (AFFDF)

Managed by the Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB), this fund is a consolidation of various welfare funds (merged in 1993) used for the rehabilitation of ex-servicemen and their families.

Key Welfare Initiatives (Exam High-Yield)

  • 📱 SAMBANDH: A WhatsApp-based chatbot for veterans to report grievances. It has resolved over 1,700 cases in less than a year.
  • 👩 Nari Sashaktikaran: Focuses on empowering "Veer Naris" (widows) through job training and economic independence.
